Where the Wild Things Are

This is my cover that pairs alongside my center spread that I uploaded last night <3

I really wanted an urban, more fun take on the story. I wanted a Max that could imagine monsters and scenery based mostly off of what (she) sees outside her window or from driving around alongside what she might see in a book. The monsters are based off of creatures that you'd potentially see in a city-like environment, nocturnal <3
I wanted to do an African American girl for Max, both because I feel that all children should be able to relate to a girl just as much as a boy in a book (even in a violet tutu) and I really want to challenge myself with the facial structure and skin tones of other ethnicities. Black people are not easy to portray if you've never tried it before! I suggest practicing with every ethnicity if you want a realistic challenge I wanted to make her adorable, fierce, adventurous and sassy in attire, face structure and body language. You can see my progress in designing her here [link] Though, it's my completed cleaned up sketches and turn arounds, you get an idea of how I wanted her to read in any page in the book.

Anyhow, I apologize for my "DEADness" lol! I just had an insanely busy semester and life. But, hopefully I can appease you guys with more work this summer~!

I got all As this semester! ANd it's my boyfriend's birthday today, so CELEBRATE~! yay! <3
